In middle school, Yamada never thought he’d end up in a boring job in a his struggling town’s tourism office. He’s dreams were big: kaiju, or monster, sized. All he ever wanted was to make his very own kaiju movie, but his youthful attempt at directing made him a joke to his classmates. So when he’s assigned to create a “local film,” a sort of Trojan Horse movie that shoehorns highlights of local hotspots and businesses, he sees it as his chance to finally prove himself as an artist. If only he can convince the mayor. As his team stumbles to pull the film together, a wild monster—of sorts—is unleashed. Starring beloved Japanese comedian Gumpy, Kaiju Guy! is a delightful tribute to big monsters, bigger dreams, the wacky special effects of tokusatsu films like Godzilla and Ultraman, and never giving up on your vision.
